Summer Camp Descriptions 2023-2024

Athletic Camps:

Archery

Open to Boys & Girls entering grades 7th, 8th, & 9th interested in learning archery and the skills that come along with it. A certified National Archery in the Schools Program Instructor (N.A.S.P.) will teach you the basic skills to be a successful in archery. Archery helps individuals learn focus, self-control, discipline, patience, and the life lessons required to be successful in the classroom, life, and on the archery range. This class is for beginners through advanced.

 Limited to 20 participants

Basketball Camp

Open to Boys & Girls entering grades 5th – 9th that are interested in improving and/or fine tuning their basketball skills. The mini-camp is geared to those individuals who are interested in pursuing participation in competitive basketball.   During the four sessions, campers will focus on major skills, breaking it down to the very basics and working our way to mastery level.  ACHS Basketball coaches and varsity players will run the various drills aimed at mechanics and technique while having fun playing the game of basketball.

 

Leisure Sports

Open to Boys & Girls entering grades 5th – 9th that are interested in learning the basic of popular recreational games. Rules and skills will be discussed and practiced in such sports as pickleball, bocce ball, horseshoes, cornhole, and golf. Learn sports and games that you can look forward to play for years to come.

 

 

Martial Arts

Open to Boys & Girls entering grades 5th – 9th that are interested in learning the basics of Iadio & Chanbara. Iadio is the Japanese martial art of sword drawing that emphasize the ability to draw a sword quickly and respond to sudden attacks. Campers will use a Bokken (wooden sword), Saya (scabbard), and Obi (belt) for practice. Chanbara is competitive sword fighting. Campers will spar wearing helmets and using padded swords and lightsabers.

           Limited to 20 participants

 Soccer Skills

Open to Girls & Boys entering grades 5th – 9th that are interested in improving and/or fine tuning their soccer skills. The camp is geared to those individuals who are interested in pursuing participation in competitive soccer at the high school level.   During the four sessions, campers will focus on major skills, breaking it down to the very basics and working our way to mastery level.  ACHS Soccer coaches and varsity players will run the various drills aimed at mechanics and technique while having fun playing the game of soccer.

  

 

Volleyball 7th, 8th, & 9th Grade

Open to Girls entering grades 7th, 8th, & 9th that are interested in improving or fine-tuning their volleyball skills. The mini-camp is geared to those individuals who are interested in pursuing participation in competitive high school volleyball.   During the four sessions, campers will focus on each major skill — passing, setting, hitting, serving — breaking it down to the very basics and working our way to mastery level.  ACHS Volleyball coaches and varsity players will run the various drills aimed at mechanics and technique while having fun playing the game of volleyball.

 

Volleyball 5th & 6th Grade

Open to Girls entering grades 5th & 6th that are interested in learning basic volleyball skills and/or wishing to fine-tune current skills. The mini-camp is geared to those individuals who are interested in pursuing participation in competitive volleyball.   During the four sessions, campers will focus on each major skill — passing, setting, hitting, serving — breaking it down to the very basics and working our way to mastery level.  ACHS Volleyball coaches and varsity players will run the various drills aimed at mechanics and technique while having fun playing the game of volleyball.

 

 

 

 

 

 

  

 

 

 

  

 

 

Academic Camps:

Art

Open to students entering grades 5th – 9th that love art or want to express their creativity.  Participants will engage in a variety of
media such as drawing, painting, printing, and decorative art led by ACHS Art students and faculty.

          Limited to 25 participants

 


Band

Open to middle school students that are 1st, 2nd
or 3rd year players who are looking to further develop their skills and be
ready for high school band. Please bring instruments (percussion just your sticks). Participants will work directly with Austin’s band director and MSBOA 1st and 2nd honors band students.

          Limited to 20 participants



Ceramics I & II

Open to students entering grades 7th, 8th & 9th want to express their creativity in a new way. Students will learn how to work with clay. Skills include clay construction using the slab method, using slip, scoring, attaching clay elements, understanding glazing, glazing techniques, class critique and how a kiln works etc. Join us for a fun filled time to express your ideas and creativity in clay!  

           Limited to 15 participants

 Creative Writing

Open to students entering grades 5th – 9th that love to write or want to improve their voice and creativity through words.  Participants will examine their voice, their word choice, technique and literary styles that are creative and engaging. From poetry to short stories and marketing, participants will develop skills to empower and proclaim through words with the guidance of ACHS faculty and students.

           Limited to 40 participants

 

Drama & Improv

Open to students entering grades 5th – 9th that enjoy acting, speaking, and making others laugh. This camp will help students increase their voice and creativity through the spoken word. Participants will practice various forms of dramatic interpretation, speaking, and improvisation learning about body language, volume, tone, word choice, and more. From poetry to comedy skits and dramatic interpretation, participants will develop skills to empower and proclaim with the guidance of ACHS faculty and students.

          Limited to 30 participants

 Drawn to Science

Open to students entering grades 5th – 9th that love art AND science and want to express their creativity while understanding the strong connection between the two fields.  Participants will engage in a variety of investigations, creative projects, and collaboration to understand the power of art and science. All participants will return home with a variety of products, a t-shirt, and the ability to creatively express science. The 4-day camp is led by a variety of art, music, and science faculty and ACHS student leaders.

          Limited to 30 participants

Mad Scientist I

Open to students entering grades 5th & 6th that are interested in science experiments.  Students will learn how to properly use equipment while conducting laboratory experiments. Participants will gain hands on experience with the microscope, centrifuge, incubator, electronic balance, Bluetooth data collection probes, and of course beakers, test tubes, and graduated cylinders.

          Limited to 20 participants

Mad Scientist II

Open to students entering grades 7th, 8th & 9th that are interested in science experiments. This camp differs from Mad Scientist I because students will learn how to use the Bunsen burner and delve deeper into content.  Students will learn how to properly use equipment while conducting laboratory experiments.   Participants will gain
hands on experience with the Bunsen burner, microscope, centrifuge, incubator, electronic balance, Bluetooth data collection probes, and of course beakers, test tubes, and graduated cylinders.

          Limited to 15 participants

STEAM

Open to students entering grades 5th – 9th that are interested in STEM/STEAM. Participants will develop a hands-on understanding of the connection between science, technology, engineering, art, and math/manufacturing through various activities led by ACHS NHS and STEAM students and faculty. Lab activities includes electrical currents,
manufacturing challenges, and 3-D printing. All participants will design and print their own 3-D printed item to keep.
