House System
The House System
Established in the 2014-2015 school year, the ACHS house system is intended to give our students a place where meaningful relationships and connections can be formed, cultivated, and fostered. ACHS has five houses all named after Augustinian Saints. The houses provide a space during the school week for students and staff to pray together, play together, serve together and care for one another. The houses provide not only an increased feeling of identity and belonging; it also provides students with a sense of tradition and abundant leadership opportunities with seniors mentoring the younger students. All staff are divided among the houses to provide mentorship and guidance, and seniors are provided leadership training to “lead” their house each year in partnership with their staff. Everything we do begins and ends in our little house families and the connections that are build there provide the structure and support for our students to thrive.
FAQs
Are siblings in the same house?
No, siblings are not in the same house and neither are children of staff members. We desire all students to have their own unique identity in their house.
Do you change houses each year?
No, your house placement is meant to be your permanent family community. Even after graduation, alumni are still considered part of their house. However, if there is a situation that requires students to relocate, we will do so. Staff changes, graduating seniors and new students will mean that some changes happen every year, but there should be pretty low turnover from year to year, providing stability and consistency within the “little family”.
What do you do in House?
It really ranges from week to week and the time of year. House is meant to be a space free from work, projects, devices. The time is meant to be “without distractions” to build friendships and connections. Sometimes House will have discussion on various topics, sometimes they will play games, sometimes they may meet up or compete against another house, or sometimes there will be large scale pep rallies or activities to compete.
TOP HOUSE TROPHY
Each year, the houses compete for the “Top House Trophy” by earning points during Homecoming Week, Catholic Schools Week, and Prom Week as well as earning points individually and group for academics, service, school spirit, athletics and more. The final event is the annual House Olympics held the last week of school with seniors where students compete in a no holds bar competition in all subject areas, athletics, and some old fashion field day events. The goal is to foster healthy competition while providing opportunities for growth and leadership while also boosting house and school pride.
