Pope Leo XIV Clears Schedule for Merrimack College, Includes Alumni Coppens

We are delighted to share that ACHS alumna Molly Coppens was blessed with an unforgettable moment during her recent visit to Vatican City in Rome. In a gracious and pastoral gesture, His Holiness, Pope Leo XIV, cleared his schedule to visit with the students.

In the mystery of Providence—so often noted by St. Augustine in the quiet movements of grace—moments such as these remind us how the journey of faith carries us farther than we imagine when we first set out.

Molly, pictured here just to the left of the Holy Father, is currently on a ten day pilgrimage, through Merrimack College following St. Augustine’s steps through the course, Pellegrinaggio in Italia.

We rejoice in her witness and pray that this encounter at the heart of the Church continues to deepen her vocation to seek truth, serve faithfully, and rest always in the One for whom every heart longs.

Di Ponio Earns Coveted First Division - Superior Rating at MSBOA

Junior Gina Di Ponio delivered an outstanding performance at the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA) District 16 Solo & Ensemble Festival at Rochester High School on February 7, competing among more than 175 talented band and orchestra students. Performing a flute solo, Gina earned a coveted First Division — Superior — rating, one of the highest distinctions awarded!

Di Ponio’s exceptional performance has qualified her to advance to the State Solo & Ensemble Festival on March 21 at Rochester Stoney Creek High School. Congratulations, Gina, on this impressive achievement! Di Ponio is pictured with ACHS very own Mrs. Howell, Band & Music Department, Music Liturgy, and Music Production & Song Writing Club Advisor.

Also representing our program at MSBOA District 16 were Violet O. and Simon O., who both earned Division II ratings for their clarinet and trumpet solos. Max V. performed a piano solo and received a Division III rating. We are proud of all of our musicians for their dedication, preparation, and hard work!

Coppens Strong Brings Communities Together

Last night, Austin Catholic High School proudly stood United As One with Memphis High School during the Boys Varsity Basketball game to raise funds and awareness for Brett Coppens, our longtime and deeply respected Facilities Director, who is courageously battling brain cancer.

Led by Principal Carolyn Balzano, the event brought together many supporters, parents, students, Board of Director members, family, friends, and Crusader and Friar alumni from both communities. The Memphis High School gym was transformed into a powerful display of unity, compassion, and community strength.

ACHS organized the t-shirt sale, and thanks to the generosity of Memphis High School, proceeds from concessions will go directly toward Brett’s care. In addition, it was announced that the Memphis High School’s annual golf outing proceeds would also be donated to support him and his family. (Golf outing details forthcoming).

“Thank you to everyone who purchased a shirt and/or attended last night’s game. I am happy to share that we raised just under $7,000, not including concession profits. It was truly a beautiful moment for our community, and Brett and Janel felt the outpouring of love and support.” -Principal Balzano.

It was truly a wonderful night filled with hope, love, and unwavering support — a beautiful reminder of what it means to come together as one.

Head over to our Austin Athletics Facebook page to get the details of a very exciting game!

Austin Catholic Celebrates Mass at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral

January 29, 2026

Our Crusader community gathered in faith at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral for Mass celebrated by Archbishop Edward J. Weisenberger. Representing Austin Catholic High School, students James Zalewski and Nathan Stark served at the altar during this special Catholic Schools Week Mass.

Representatives from more than 60 Catholic schools and priests from across the Archdiocese of Detroit were in attendance, reminding us of our call, in the spirit of St. Augustine, to be united in heart and mind on our journey toward God. The shared witness of faith, learning, and community beautifully reflected the strength of our #catholicfaith and educational mission.

Thank you Director of Campus Ministry Ms. Devine for always being there for our students.
