SAVI & AVI
What is SAVI?
The Student Augustinian Values Institute (SAVI) is an outgrowth of the AVI. It is a directed three-day retreat-like experience for students at Augustinian high schools based on the core values of Truth, Unity, and Love. It is sponsored and conducted by the ASEA, bringing together groups of students from all ASEA member high schools. (there are 10). It is supported and funded by the Federation of Augustinians of North America.
Students should be either sophomores or juniors in high school, so that a longer-term commitment and the ability to impact the whole school may be possible by the students who participate in the institute. Students meet together under the direction of Augustinian school leaders to hear presentations on the Augustinian core values, enjoy each other’s company and time in social outings and free time, and participate in service opportunities which are directed as showing the connection between the Augustinian and Gospel Values. Students who complete the SAVI should be expected to assist in promoting the formation of Augustinian Christian community at their school, and in providing ideas, suggestions, and leadership to help actualize both the values and the practical lessons they have learned at SAVI and from the other schools and students.
.ACHS has been sending students to SAVI since 2013 and our students continue to find creative ways to live and promote these values back at Austin. Some of the programs that originated with our SAVI students are:
-
- the House structure
- Blazer ceremony
- lunch prayer over P.A.
- various spirit week ideas, and more!
Attending SAVI?
- Faculty and Staff will nominate students in the junior and sophomore class who they feel would make good SAVI delegates.
- These students are invited to apply answering a few questions.
- Responses are anonymously scored and the top 8-10 are invited to interview with the Director of Campus Ministry and Principal.
- Six students, usually 4 ladies and 2 gents, are selected to attend.
- The few months leading up to SAVI, students are required to attend pre planning sessions and create their school welcome video.
- The Institute rotates between fall and spring so that students playing sports have an opportunity to attend. Location also rotates among the 10 High Schools.
What is AVI?
The Augustinian Values Institute (AVI) is a directed three-day retreat like experience based on the Augustinian core values of Truth, Unity, and Love. It is sponsored and conducted annually by the Augustinian Secondary Education Association (ASEA) of the Federation of Augustinians of North America (FANA).
Groups of faculty, staff, board members, administrators, parents and other stakeholders representing each of the Augustinian high schools of North America, and guests from around the world, are invited to meet at a rotating host school site each year. During their time together participants hear presentations on St. Augustine and deepen their understanding of the Augustinian core values of Truth, Unity, and Love which are foundational to an Augustinian education. They pray together, share reflections with other participants, participate in activities that promote the formation of community among the schools, and develop particular strategies to implement the values at the participant’s home school.
The goal of the AVI is to gain and deepen an appreciation of the Augustinian charism and style. Since 2004, the Institute continues to draw full cohorts from around the world creating a sense of community, appreciation, solidarity and mutual support for the Augustinian school mission.
ACHS sends four to six staff annually, and hosted in 2023 with resounding praise from attendees.
Building City of God Retreat
Seeing a continued need to develop lay administrators and staff further, the ASEA developed the Building City of God Retreat (BCoG) as a second, more intense experience to follow the AVI.
This retreat explores in depth the Augustinian philosophy of education as it pertains to Catholic high schools at the present time. It includes reading materials, study time, prayer time, and dialogue with Augustinian educators from other schools to share points of view and experiences.
The first was held in 2016 in San Diego and since has continued to evolve and grow into a deep personal retreat centered on St. Augustine’s conversion and the practice of interiority. ACHS sends two attendees annually and hosted the retreat in 2023.
